Gene Hull Gene Hull is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with additional studies at Julliard, Fairfield University and the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University. His writing days began while a professional musician ―both as an alto saxophonist with Duke Ellington and other famous bands of the post-swing era and with his own band, The Jazz Giants, which was featured at the Newport Jazz Festival. During this period he produced two poetry collections and several essays and short stories. Gene toured as musical director for many international celebrity performers, interacting with countless notables of the entertainment world. Later his career evolved significantly as the Senior Entertainment Producer at Royal Caribbean Cruises International for both its stage shows and ice shows. During this time he contributed articles to Tennis Magazine and Cruise Industry News. While at Royal Caribbean his illustrated collection of pithy Tennis verse, GOING TO COURT (humorous looks at the amateur tennis scene), was published by New Day Publishing and accepted by the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI. Work on his memoir began in earnest after he retired from the cruise industry, while studying in the FIU Creative Writing program. HOOKED ON A HORN, Memoirs of Recovered Musician won the 2006 Florida Royal Palm Literary Award for Memoir. It tells of challenges in his robust career as a music professional and has earned high critical praise for its humor, truth and innovative style. His newest book, SLICE OF LIFE, Our Ways and Days―published in summer of 2008 by Fiction Publishing, Inc.―is his salute to the short story form. He is especially proud of this book. SLICE OF LIFE endeavors to be thought-provoking, but first aims to be enjoyable and satisfying for the reader. Some of it's stories have been called his "master stroke" as a writer. A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Hull makes his home in Fort Pierce on Florida’s Treasure Coast where is President of the Treasure Coast Writers Guild and moderator of the long-established Morningside Library Writers Critique Group. He is the father of eight children, several of whom are musicians. He is a certified Toast Masters Speaker and can be contacted at genehull@msn.com.
