Gene Hull has had three robust careers - musician, producer, and writer.

He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with additional studies at Juilliard, Fairfield University and the Creative Writing Program of Florida International University.

As a professional saxophonist and multi-reed player he played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Tex Beneke-Glenn Miller Band, and other big bands of the post-swing era.

Among his own bands: The Jazz Giants, won acclaim at the historic 1962 Newport Jazz Festival. His show band, Free Spirit, toured for several years in an elegant entertainment circuit that included top hotels, nightclubs and International resorts. Music Maximus - with its all-female string section, headlined in Las Vegas and backed many notable performers.

As an instrumentalist-producer-conductor he worked with Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Mel Torme, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Leonard Bernstein, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Paul Whiteman, Katherine Hepburn, Neil Sadaka, Ted Lewis, Vic Damone, Sandler and Young, The Four Tops, The Temptations and many jazz icons of their era.

After years of touring and traveling, he segued to the Cruise Industry where for twenty years he developed two positions- entertainment director at Scandinavian World Cruises, and Senior Entertainment Producer for Royal Caribbean International, Inc., producing its spectacular stage shows and ice show productions.

His books include:

Chasing the Muse – award-winning memoir, which includes over fifty pictures and captures the highlights (and lowlights) of an era.

Hull serves as president of the Treasure Coast Writers Guild in Florida, is a board member of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, moderator of the Morningside Library Writer’s Workshop, a featured book reviewer for Florida Scripps Newspapers, an associate publisher in the POD book publishing industry, and a Toastmasters Speaker frequently engaged to talk about his books.
