Gene Hull Gene Hull is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with additional studies at Juilliard, Fairfield University and the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University. He has had three robust careers. His writing days began while a professional musician ―both as an alto saxophonist with Duke Ellington and many other bands of the post-swing era and as leader his own band, the Jazz Giants, which was featured at the Newport Jazz Festival. He was a conductor and musical director for celebrities performers in Las Vegas and national tours. During this period he produced two poetry collections, several essays and short stories. His career as a music professional evolved when he became the Senior Entertainment Producer at Royal Caribbean Cruises International for stage shows and ice shows. During his tenure, productions shows were consistently ranked number One in the Cruise Industry. In this second career he prepared for the writing life which followed and has had three books published. GOING TO COURT - his illustrated collection of Tennis verse, (a light look at those who play recreational tennis), published by New Day Publishing and accepted by the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI. HOOKED ON A HORN, Memoirs of Recovered Musician - winner of the Royal Palm Literary Prize for Memoir awarded by the Florida Writers Association. Describes the challenges and rewards of the career of a music professional. Has earned critical praise for its humor, truth and uniquely humorous style, i.e., juxtaposing the re-occurring duel of author's conscience with the actual facts.. SLICE OF LIFE, Our Ways and Days - a new collection of dramatic short stories; called his "master stroke" as a writer (see Reviews), characterized as "rewarding literary entertainment." Gene is President of the Treasure Coast Writers Guild* and contributes articles and reviews for various publications. His review column ,Local Author Spotlight appears each Sunday in several Scripps Florida Newspapers. His is moderator of the Morningside Library Writers Critique Workshop in Port St. Lucie, FL and a Toastmasters speaker frequently engaged as guest speaker for clubs and community organizations.
